Going Nuts for Coconut!

There are a multitude of coconut products in the marketplace these days. Much of the marketing of coconut products touts them as the best food item one can consume. Do not believe everything you hear and read about coconut products. Here are some facts.

Coconut
Water -­‐ Most of these beverages are high carbohydrate drinks. They are sometimes infused with electrolytes. Caution should be taken if one is trying to replace their electrolytes with a high sugar drink. It may cause stomach upset.

Coconut Milk – Coconut milk is a high fat milk product made from the coconut pulp. Generally, it does not contain more than 1-­‐2 grams of protein per serving. This product is not able to replace the amino acids or protein that is provided with regular cow’s milk.

Coconut Oil-­‐ Coconut oil is often used in cooking and many trainers state that it is healthier than olive oil. It is not healthier than olive oil. It is about 90% fat (depending on the product) and this is primarily saturated fat. Research shows that a diet high in saturated fats contributes to inflammation. Athletes need to work to reduce inflammation and not create it.

Choose and use coconut rich foods in moderation. Your body will thank you.
